Message from the Chief
Instructor
Our dojo puts special effort
into teaching young children. As in the saying, "Strike while
the iron is hot," children should be trained while their minds
and bodies are still open and flexible. In order to bring out
the best in a child, we teach to each individual's needs, striving
to make a good sincere person rather than a champion. The most
important thing we emphasize in educating these kids through martial
arts is for them to "Just Go Forward." This seems quite simple,
but I think in actuality it is extremely difficult and tremendously
essential. It is my hope that these children can become a person
who can go forward in a positive, spirited, and fair way, no matter
what obstacles they face in their future lives.
The name of our Dojo [Yugei-kan] comes from the discourse
of Confucius's "Gei ni asobu" which is a part of a well-known
passage. Gei is made up of the six skills; Rei = etiquette, Gaku
= music, I = archery, Go = horsemanship, Sho = calligraphy, and
Su = arithmetic. "Gei ni asobu" means to learn as well as enjoy
oneself while studying things and doing martial arts.
